Scoot saves fuel with iPads in place of TVs
New Airline Scoot is using iPads in place of TV screens to improve fuel efficiency.
The low cost airline strippedĀ out two tons of TV equipment from a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft handed down from parent Singapore Airlines.
The iPads combined with new lightweight seats gives a weight reduction of around 7% of the weight of the aircraft.
This is even taking into account an extra 40 seats on the plane.
The reduced weight will provide a huge financial annual return of around $500,000 as fuel is the main expense for any airline operator.
The iPads, which will clip onto the seat in front, will be rented out to passengers and will come preloaded with content.
Passengers with their own iPads can simply click it into place in the holder.
Scoot’s maiden flight from Singapore to Sydney also touched down a few hours ago.
